Rumer is one of the hottest new artists in the UK, having already sold over 700,000 CDs on word of mouth alone. American music fans can sample the buzz when her single, “Aretha,” is featured this weekend as the Feedback Track on the Smooth Jazz Top 20 Countdown. Rumer grew up literally around the world – Pakistan, the Australian Outback, South Africa, and eventually London. Throughout, music was one of the main ways she entertained herself. Upon returning to the UK, she discovered old classic movies on TV and became obsessed with Judy Garland. She admits that those Hollywood images had a huge impact on her blossoming songwriting: “I am always looking for a lilting, romantic melody. I basically wanted to write the soundtrack for Hedy Lamaar walking down that spiral staircase.” To support her desire to perform, Rumer worked dozens of jobs around London, from working as a hairdresser to fixing broken iPods at an Apple store. Her sound caught the attention of legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach, who flew her to California to sing for him. Often compared to singers like Karen Carpenter and Carole King, her album, Seasons of My Soul, is out soon.
