John Mayer Explains Twitter Defection |
| Oct 06 2010 |

John Mayer tweets no more. Last month, the singer opted to shut down his Twitter account, losing 3.7 million followers. He took to his website to explain that he feared he wouldn’t be creating any decent music if he was spending time on social media. “No artwork created by someone with a healthy grasp of social media thus far has proven to be anything other than disposable...” he writes. "I'm not knocking Twitter for those who are trying to make a name for themselves... But for those who have already established themselves it's a slow erosion of the artistic notion." Mayer is no fan of things like Facebook or Twitter as a marketing tool, either. "I'm not a brand, and I don't refer to myself in the third person. I'm a dude who plays guitar and writes songs. When I'm done writing and recording them I will market them." He’ll have some time to do both, since he just wrapped his successful Battle Studies tour.
