Think of it as American Idol on steroids: Al Jarreau and Patti Austin are judges at this year’s Thelonius Monk International Jazz Competition, one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. This year’s event is scheduled for Oct. 3 in Washington DC. Twelve aspiring jazz vocalists will perform for a panel which includes Jarreau and Austin, along with Aretha Franklin, Diane Reeves and Dee Dee Bridgewater. The finalists are vying for scholarship money and a recording contract with Concord Records. Three of them will then join all-stars including George Duke and Herbie Hancock at the Kennedy Center on Monday, Oct. 4, for a Gala Concert saluting the Great American Songbook. The event will be taped for later broadcast on BET.
