Grammy-winning singer Sting celebrates a birthday this weekend; he turns 59 on Saturday, Oct. 2. Born Gordon Sumner in Newcastle, England, he worked several jobs including helping his father deliver milk, teaching school and digging ditches. He earned his distinctive nickname from the striped jersey he frequently wore while performing in a local jazz band. As punk took over, Sting joined up with Andy Sumner and Stewart Copeland to form The Police, becoming one of the biggest acts of the 80s. Between his work with the group and his solo career, he’s won a total of 16 Grammy awards. He’s as much known for his political activism as his music, doing annual benefits for the Amazon Rainforest, human rights and more. As for this year’s birthday celebration, Sting will be spending it on stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall as his Symphonicities tour rolls on.
