Catching Up with Al Jarreau

He may have just celebrated his 70th birthday, but Al Jarreau has no plans to slow down. On a recent tour stop in Indianapolis, he talked to reporters about what’s next. The Grammy-winning singer is currently working on a new album with producer Paul Brown, scheduled for early 2011 release. But he admits his legendary pipes have changed somewhat.  He told Nuvo.net, "Yeah, if you live long enough, your ass gets old. Your voice is gonna change. Stevie Wonder is the only guy who seems to have the same voice he had as a fifteen year old. I have some changes in my voice and throat just from doing it. The worse thing for a singer is to become a professional vocalist."

While having had success in the pop, jazz and R&B genres, Jarreau has one dream he still hopes to achieve: "I have not done a big band record, I want to do that. I have a feeling for that era and what singers can do with the music."

Despite a health scare this summer, Jarreau is feeling good and plans to resume a full performing schedule after the holidays. He acknowledges that the economy makes touring more challenging these days: “It does come down to what you can afford to do. I've got a repertoire on pre-recorded CD and I will stand up and sing to it, if it comes down to that and I can't afford a trio. I am going to keep singing in whatever way that I can."
