Candy Dulfer celebrates a birthday this weekend [Sept. 19]. She turns 41. The daughter of Dutch saxophonist Hans Dulfer, she began playing drums at age five, before choosing the saxophone. Aside from some basic musical training, Dulfer is completely self-taught.  Dulfer cut her first album at age 11, and formed her own band, Funky Stuff, at 14. Three years later, she was opening for Madonna on the singer’s Netherlands tour. After Prince invited her to perform with him, session work rapidly followed, leading to her breakthrough collaboration with Dave Stewart on the song “Lily Was Here.” Dulfer also hosts her own TV interview show in the Netherlands, Candy Meets… She joins Dave Koz, Jonathan Butler and Brian Culbertson on this year’s Smooth Jazz Christmas tour, which kicks off Nov. 26.
