Boney James Talks Influences

Boney James doesn’t like to define his music, preferring to label himself simply a “musician” – versus one limited to any format. But he does admit to finding plenty of inspiration in the R&B genre, and melds that into his sound. In an inteview with Cincinnati.com [he’s scheduled to perform in that city this weekend], he says, “…if I had to categorize my music I'd call it instrumental R&B and jazz R&B. That's what I've been trying to accomplish anyway.”

James is currently at work on a new project, one he promises will take him back to the funky grooves he grew up on. “That's the music I love, and I draw really heavily on that influence when I'm writing. The style that I play just resonates with people who dig that kind of music. That's one of the reasons I have that sort-of crossover R&B appeal. I'm also coming from that same sensibility.” His chosen instrument, the saxophone, used to figure prominently in early R&B. While it’s influence seems to have faded in today’s music, James is on a mission: “I'm trying to bring it back, man. Bringing the sax back.”
