Alicia Keys Praises "Tough" Mom |

Growing up in the tough Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, Alicia Keys could've easily gone down the wrong path -- but credits her no-nonsense mom with keeping her on track. Talking to the UK's Guardian newspaper, "I had to decide if I was going to do the right thing or the wrong thing...So many people I know ended up in jail. How did I avoid it? I had a really tough mama." Having a focus on music also kept her grounded. "Growing up in New York City, everybody wanted to be heard. I knew if I wanted to be heard, I had to do the work." Keys herself is a new mom, with a 9-month old son, Egypt.
